Welcome to Fern Valley

Here in central Alberta prime farm country,my husband Martin and I work together raising beef cattle and Appaloosa horses. Fern valley appaloosas have long been known for their quality of temperament conformation and color.I have recently rediscovered a love of writing and have published 2 collections of poetry. "Telling Tails" and Tails Trails and Campfire stories" . I look forward to a future spreading my wings as an author and as a horse woman .

Foaling contest #3 Fern Valleys Jazz

Now  Jazzy is  not  supposed to be due till a bit later , her  breeding  date was again 1 single breeding on July 22 ,but looking at her today  I got  to thinking I better post it sooner than later. Richie was  bred first and is  not there yet either  but they will do  what they will do so...

Fern Valley's Jazz , "Jazzy" is bred  back to Windwalker  Cactus , Jazzy is a second  generation  Fern Valley Appaloosa, daughter of Chips (Chile Poivre ) and C7 Sparks Jewel (both  can  be  found  on the honorable mentions  page ) Jazzy is a special  girl, and she  is a wonderful  producer! Her  foals so  far  (all sired  by Cactus )  are;

FV Jazz Time

FV Sparks Image

And  FV  Dandy Line

As I said  she  has  more than  proven herself . All of these  foals  have  been  easy to love, gorgeous and good minded , and each are  succeeding with their  new  owners.
Contest is the same, choose  date, sex, and color ! Good Luck and stay safe

Meet "my " Maker

Well actually , my "FV Rainmakers Quest" or Maks as  we  will be  calling him .
Another  angle  so  you can see all his spots, or at least more of them, there  sure is a bunch!
So the name  suggestions  you all gave me  were great, and I really appreciate the input . Jackpot is a name  I used  for a foal of Richie's  BB (before  blogging ) who sadly  was  born  with a ruptured  bladder and  did not survive.I may  use  the name again some  day but am just  not there  yet.As  for the S names , I just  could not  get one that hit me quite like  this one. Maks  is a grandson of DVS Dream Maker (son of the  great Dreamfinder)  on his  dam  line , and on his  sires  line a bit  further  back a descendant of Top Quest (follow this link to see some of the loud coloring he had!) So his  name  does  fit as an homage to his  heritage. The rain part? well the poor kid  was born in a rainstorm and on day 3 of his  life I think  he  has  only seen about 18 hours of  totally dry  weather(he does have a shed ) .Central and  southern Alberta was in the throws of a huge tantrum on the part of  mother  nature today with severe weather  warnings and Tornado  warnings all around. Here  was mostly  just rain and Thunder but Edmonton  was  under a severe  watch and I believe  south and east of the city  did  see funnel  clouds
(credit 102.3 Now! Radio')
And  this  photo  was sent in by a listener to a local radio  station  from a listener  at Pigeon lake , it is a water spout  less  dangerous  than a  funnel  cloud  or a tornado  certainly, but another  example of the power of  nature.
And finally , my brother in law  Marc  was the one  to first meet the little man , while out  for his early morning walk  with Mac  his  westie so they too get a nod in Maks' barn  name .
There you go , its official .so now  you just have to bear  with me and the deluge of  baby pics coming your way till the next  foal arrives. Then they will double and so on and...
Stay safe  friends

A word from the boys

Hey all!
Johnnie Handsome  here. checking  in
All this  talk of  foals and mares, and  branding  away  from home, horse  shows  for Arse and blah  blah blah,Pretty soon it  will be all about the babies, and of  course Phoenix and Cactus  will be bragging . Me and the guys  just  wanted to remind you we are here!

Just us  3 now that Stryker is  playing  babysitter to the young  Harley.
We laughed and laughed till it started to rain and we  saw he and that  darn  kid  have a shed!!!!
Oh well we are not made of  sugar, rain makes for good mud and dirt  baths!

Wilder looking  elegant  for a picture (really its the only  clean  part of him)
The dogs  come  to "help " move us  to a new  pen , like we  need help!
We  know  darn well when the gate opens we  go through]
sometimes we  try to go through the next one too

But mostly  we  know the rules , just good  boys who like to visit , happy trails  till we  get to hijack the blog again.
Oh yeah, mom says Stay safe!

Cowboys (and cowgirls ) to cross rails

It has been Quite a  weekend!, and apparently a week since I last posted (oops!)
I will post the 3rd foaling  contest soon but  today I will share  what I have been up to the  last  couple  days .
Yesterday we headed  east of the city, which I rarely do, so  rarely in fact I got a little lost, and that is  terrible , I was going to  my cousins place!Cousin Cliff and  family had their big annual  branding .I wasn't just  for a  visit, there so much to help(they have a huge  crew) but Martin is  not  much  for standing off to the side so he  pitched in a bit , and I too  found  myself  wandering into the pens to grab a gate  from time to time, or  help  push a few  calves out ,but mostly I visited  with  family and a few old acquaintances  from  mountain  rides in the  past , and I took pictures. My  favorite little point and  shoot Lumix  looked part way through like it  was  dying so some of these are cell phone pics but they  turned out well. overall, featured are my  cousins  Steven, Mark, and Laura, also  Laura's hubby Luke,

This  was  followed by an amazing supper cousin Shirley is an amazing  cook, and even though I didn't  do  much to earn it I  chowed  down like I had  never seen food! What a great day.

Then there  was  today , not actually cross rails, but  well I took a little poetic license  with the title , Angela and (As we love to call him "Arse") were at a schooling  show today/ in both  the 2 "3  class and the 2"6/ I was only able to hang out  for the first  part, but she  has let me  know she  got  3 fourths  in the 2"6 courses. Well done! Biggish  classes  20  per class so a pretty good showing I would say, and a little  bittersweet,to me and those  who knew and  loved the  gentle giant that was Eastern Ruler, Eurus' sire, who sadly passed away  early this week. You did your daddy  proud,Eurus!

So that is  the  wrap up of another  weekend , quite a lot of  fun, and I got to practice a little  with my big camera, and the little  lumix? seems like it  might be okay after all, turned it on and it seems  fine, so hopefully...
Stay safe and have a great week
