Welcome to Fern Valley

Here in central Alberta prime farm country,my husband Martin and I work together raising beef cattle and Appaloosa horses. Fern valley appaloosas have long been known for their quality of temperament conformation and color.I have recently rediscovered a love of writing and have published 2 collections of poetry. "Telling Tails" and Tails Trails and Campfire stories" . I look forward to a future spreading my wings as an author and as a horse woman .

Melancholy Musings

Must have been a different moon this weekend or something. My muse woke again, and she was in a mood! both of the last  poems I have written have been a little melancholy , but I hope show also some gleam of the positive. Wasn't sure if I would post this one , but, well , here you go . Ya gotta take the good and the bad , and all the middle and sad too right?

Trails will end
The day comes to us all of course
We can no longer ride a horse
While I hope and I do humbly pray
That day is still yet, years away

I will not face that time with tears
Or bitterness regrets and fears
The retirement that I have earned
Will be time to share what I have learned

And hope some young and open mind
Will take up the trails left behind

So on that day some time from now
When I chase that one last cow
Or ride out into the bright blue day
I will celebrate it in my way

And step down one last time with grace
And with contentment look on the face
Of one who’s heart has been true and strong
And carried me for oh so long

 Whatever horse it may be,
In their gentle eyes I will see
All of them that came before
I dare not ask for any more

As always , stay safe my friends

Not too sad, but rather bittersweet - I understand where you're coming from.

That muse really is in a mood. I'm with Kate, it is bittersweet, I hope that time is years away also.

I hope I feel that way, but I am afraid they will pull me kicking and screaming from horses when i get too old.

Unfortunately, that day will come. However, let's pray that day is a long way off.

Hahahahaha! When the day comes I will find you a cart and harness. Easy entry of course...

You may give up riding, but you can still get out there and play! You can always be my navigator too... lol

My riding is limited anymore and sometimes my body calls it all off for me, way before I want to step down out of the irons. Lucky for me, Kat Man is stepping up and taking over. It's a simple transition really.

After our two upcoming big weekends I will be looking at getting another one or two of ours going. Why not? They aren't doing anything else!

I think this is my favorite of your poems.
It reminds me of one of my mentors, Al Grandchamp, who as far as I know was still riding well into his late 90's; the last time I saw him he was 93 and riding a horse, helping his friend Walt Vermadhal teach a clinic. He died at the age of 103.
