Welcome to Fern Valley

Here in central Alberta prime farm country,my husband Martin and I work together raising beef cattle and Appaloosa horses. Fern valley appaloosas have long been known for their quality of temperament conformation and color.I have recently rediscovered a love of writing and have published 2 collections of poetry. "Telling Tails" and Tails Trails and Campfire stories" . I look forward to a future spreading my wings as an author and as a horse woman .

Plans for the weekend ?

Several people asked me last week ,if I had any plans for the long weekend?
my response, was nope , laying low .We live in an area quite close to Lac Ste Anne , and though we don't think about it much most of the year ,it is in fact a resort area. My place is about 1 1/2  miles from the lake , near a summer village and across the lake form the main beach. There are several "summer villages around the lake , some  permanent residents and  the weekend visitors. I have no problem with most  but there are always the bad eggs . My  thoughts are best reflected by my statement on Facebook this morning

"Its a holiday weekend here, note to all the folk who rush out from the big city to enjoy the serenity of the country in the campgrounds and lake lots, welcome. Couple of things though; no, my horse pasture, driveway, hay field etc ARE NOT A PARK AND NOT A QUAD TRACK, no, you cannot pet the horsies ,and if you could kindly SLOW DOWN on the gravel roads they, are not a speed way that would be cool. Finally , please be careful with the fireworks ,this is where you relax, but it is where I live and if it burns up... and for heavens sake wear a helmet on the quad , the only thing that would upset me more than you driving on my fields is finding you dead or dying in them !"

With all of the extra  traffic and people around ,I don't tend to head out much on long weekends . The highways are crazy, and I am not a big fan of crowds . So I stay home, lay low and spend time with the ponies . Today I brought "the golden boys" in for some handling which is something I have needed to do for some time. They were pretty good, a little hesitant to let me halter them, Comet  more than Quinn, which shows  what time  does, when I halter broke them Comet  was easy peasy and Quinn seemed convinced I was killing him! LOL  Nothing that exiting today , just a little avoidance and walking away . A little of this every day , and they will be just fine . Tried to get a few pics for ads and such , going to have to  get some  more bu these are a start

Why blogger has suddenly decided to  refuse to rotate pictures I have no idea, but I left this one  up anyhow, he looks like such a cute little rogue
Other than that ,checked pastures , mowed the lawn , went to the lake for a little swim at Deb's cabin. The relaxed at a little fire in my  yard . Pretty good day  all in all , hoping the weekend continues along the same lines .

Wishing everyone a wonderful SAFE weekend . And to my Canadian friends , HAPPY CANADA  DAY

Sounds like my kinda weekend. I would lay low too, when the city folks come out to play.

Cute golden boys, they grow so fast!

I tell ya, that Quinn colt is gonna be something special. He's a jumper, FV. Built for it, for sure.
Comet's cute too, but Quinn just stops my heart.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!

Hoping the yahoos don't yahoo too hard around your farm, FV.

They are cute, and funny how they react when you go back to catch them again. I hear you on holidays we try to stay home too and go somewhere when its not busy.

Every once and awhile I catch someone trying to pet/feed my horses along the road. They usually get and earful!!
In the Summer we usually get people driving up our driveway like it is a road, even with the open, gate out front and no road sign. Just because there are two houses on the property.

I hear you on the traffic and people thing! Do the same thing here on long weekends unless I am teaching a clinic somewhere. We are lucky to be well off the beaten track, but the highways are crazy. It is actually nice to just relax a bit, play with ponies and catch up on some reading even....maybe do that today cause it is raining. Horses are so enjoying the break from the horseflies.

Your youngsters are developing very nicely too!

Why or why do people think they can just interlope on property of their own free will? We had a HUNTER in the woods where I board my horse... He was up in a tree with a gun...

Enjoy the holiday and I agree - staying home for holidays like this is the best way to celebrate ;)

How aggravating to have those people intruding on your peace and quiet.

I know my brother has some of the same issues out where he lives, and he always says, 'If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?'

WOW!!! I've never been much into Appaloosas, but you're horses are incredible.. can't wait to read some more posts from you. Maybe you'll expand my breed preference. :)

I didn't know you lived so close to a lake, but I can understand the problems with tourists. Great message posted on fb, cute but to the point.

Wow. Your Facebook comment makes it sound like you're in my old neighborhood in the U.S. I'm discovering fireworks stands on every corner in Arizona. They were illegal in Nevada, but people still went into California to buy them. I'm not looking forward to any fires starting here either. It's just too dry to risk using fireworks for holidays.

Da boyz are looking good- Can't believe you don't have people beating down the door to check them out. Have to say I like Comet better, GL!
Do you have the photos rotated in your own photo editing program before you load them on your blog? I do, I use Microsoft Picture Manager, and never have any problems.

Oh, they are both beautiful, Shirley. No arguments here:)
I'm already being unfaithful to Johnny, so I can't divide my affections TOO much.

Hope the evening went safely, FV. Have to say, our Canada's Wonderland fireworks were actually quieter this year. Much less boom-booming, more sparklies.
Flip was very happy with that:)

It was just as much fun for me to watch the fireflies, they really put on a show when the fireworks went off:)

Makes me happy I don't live any closer to the Blood Indian Dam and the campground there.....mind you.....this weekend it's under water from the hail storm. Great pic's.
